Strychnine, which is essentially strychnidine with a keto group at position 10, is a monoterpenoid indole alkaloid. It functions as a neurotransmitter, avicide, cholinergic antagonist, glycine receptor antagonist, and rodenticide. It is an organic heteroheptacyclic molecule and a monoterpenoid indole alkaloid. It is a strychnine(1+) conjugate base. It comes from a strychnidine hydride.

It is a white crystalline powder or colourless, odourless, extremely bitter crystals with the molecular formula C41H22N2O2.5H2O4S. Weight in molecules: 383.45 g/mol.
